Beetle Kill on the Oregon Timber Trail

One last stop on my journey home—a very special place indeed. Back in 2016 when I was leading the development of the Oregon Timber Trail I fell in love with this rugged and lonely landscape, and was excited to return to see old friends and work on logging out one of the more notorious sections of jackstraw beetle kill.

We were camped at the head of the Crooked Creek Trail, and began our attack on the notorious Red Mile first thing in the morning. With two saws running and four very busy swampers, we were able to knock out the last remaining mile with a constant, cool drizzle keeping us company all day long. By the end of the weekend we had cleared from Crane Mtn to Cox Pass, and even got a shuttle lap in on Crooked Creek—go ride this trail! It’s rideable in both directions, or you can run a shuttle to the Walker Trailhead and add a few pedaly miles before the descent.
