OROGENESIS, A year in review

As we leave the darkest days of the year and enter a new one, we like to reflect on the people and places we’ve gotten to know better over the last 12 months. And woo-boy, if it isn’t a long list! Here’s a peek at some of the highlights—if you want to hear the stories you’ll have to join us in person at our 2024 stewardship events.

Accomplishments:

2017 Grassroots feasibility analysis begins

2018 Scout base grows, many options considered

2020 Preferred alignment refined 

2021 Scouting continues, relationship building with stakeholder groups begins

2022 Established fiscal umbrella relationship with Bikepacking Roots

2022 Founded the Mountain Builders Circle

2022 Hired an Executive Director 

2022 Established bylaws, mission, and elected a board of directors

2022 Interviews and articles in 12 publications

2023 Engaged with 35 nonprofit organizations and 12 governmental agencies across 4 states

2023 Advocacy campaigns for 6 trail planning efforts across 3 states

2023 Registered as nonprofit in NV & applied for federal 501c3 designation

2023 Built and launched the Orogenesis website

2023 Collaborated on 10 volunteer events totaling 2,822 volunteer hours

2023 Extended the Orogenesis route 260km north into Canada

2023 Conducted a series of Route Refinement Workshops

2023 Developed a trail inventory database 

2023 Traveled to Washington DC to support the Bicycling on Long Distance Trails Act

Where We’re Headed:

  • Develop a sustainable stewardship strategy for maintaining 1,500 miles of backcountry singletrack 

  • Collaborate in ongoing regional planning efforts to improve town-to-trails connectivity

  • Launch route ambassador program

  • Identify priority gap connections and begin solving the approximately 200 miles of missing trail

  • Build community with an event series that highlights the best parts of the trail and celebrate the communities that have built and maintained those trails
